Vitamin D deficiency: An important, common, and easily treatable cardiovascular risk factor
JACC - Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 12/04/08
Lee JH et al. – A review article on vitamin D deficiency summarizes evidence that low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels may adversely affect cardiovascular health. Discussed are the mechanisms of activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, causing predisposition to hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, and deficiency-related increase in parathyroid hormone, which increases insulin resistance and is associated with diabetes, hypertension, inflammation, and increased cardiovascular risk.
