Review of published clinical trials, with a focus on randomized design, for management of NAFLD

Results

Increasing recognition that cardiovascular risk issues are associated with NAFLD
Clinical trials of NAFLD management focus mainly on hepatic complications
Data support greatest biochemical and histological benefit with weight-loss measures and thiazolidinediones; benefits and risks with this drug remain to be eluciated
Trial data currently insufficient to recommend other NAFLD treatment strategies
Emerging need for early multiple factor risk intervention, emphasizing cardiometabolic risk and weight management, in addition to minimizing risk of hepatic complications
