European Heart Journal, 10/30/08
Løkkegaard E et al. – A national cohort study shows that hormone therapy (HT) regimen and route of application may modify the influence of HT on the risk of myocardial infarction (MI)
Methods- Study of the risk of MI as a result of HT
- Focus on the influence of age, HT duration, various regimens and routes, progestagen type, and estrogen dose
- Review of 698,098 healthy Danish women (age 51–69 yrs) followed 1995–2001
- Daily updated national capture on HT determined based on central prescription registry
- National registers identified 4947 MI incidents
- Overall, no increased risk of MI with current HT compared with women who never used HT
- Risk increased with longer duration for younger women
- In all age groups, highest risk of MI was with continuous HT regimen
- No increased risk with unopposed estrogen, cyclic combined therapy, or tibolone
- Significantly lower risk with dermal vs oral unopposed estrogen therapy
- No associations with progestagen type or estrogen dose
