Serum cholesterol in idiopathic and lupus-related protein-losing enteropathy
Lupus, 06/12/08
Kim YG et al. - This study shows that the levels of serum total cholesterol are intriguing feature in systemic lupus erythematosus–associated protein-losing enteropathy patients.
Methods- Aim was to evaluate the characteristics of protein-losing enteropathy SLE pts
- Among the 380 SLE pts, records of 7 pts with generalized edema, hypoalbuminemia w/o proteinuria and positive results on 99mTc-labelled human serum albumin scintigrams were reviewed
- Patient characteristics and laboratory findings were compared between these 7 pts and pts with lupus enteritis or idiopathic protein-losing enteropathy
- ESR and serum total cholesterol levels were increased in SLE–related protein-losing enteropathy pts vs lupus enteritis pts
- Compared with idiopathic protein-losing enteropathy pts, the level of serum total cholesterol was increased, but the level of serum albumin was decreased in pts with SLE–related protein-losing enteropathy
- Among pts with SLE–related protein-losing enteropathy, 4 pts had high serum total cholesterol levels and achieved complete remission after receiving high doses of steroid treatment
- However, 3 pts who had low serum total cholesterol levels responded poorly to the steroid-only treatment, and could achieve complete remission only after 3 mos of cyclophosphamide pulse treatment with concurrent corticosteroid therapy
