Statins and their use in preventing carotid disease
Sillesen H - Statins stop progression or may induce regression of intima-media thickness, and statins may also stop plaque growth or even induce reduction of plaque volume. Areas rich in lipids within plaques may be reduced in size and/or in number of inflammatory cells. Ultrasound reflectivity may be reduced by statin treatment, indicating less lipid/inflammatory content. Finally, statins appear to reduce the risk of all cardiovascular events (eg, stroke, myocardial infarction, need for revascularization) in patients with carotid stenosis.
