Pre-participation screening of young competitive athletes for prevention of sudden cardiac death
Corrado D et al. – Findings suggest that, to prevent athletic sudden cardiac death, public health administrators worldwide should consider implementation of a mass-screening program, including 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG). Methods- Study of whether a 25-yr Italian pre-athletic participation screening (including 12-lead ECG) program for prevention of sudden cardiac death is a valid and advisable public health strategy
Results- ECG screening has adequate sensitivity and specificity for detection of potentially lethal cardiomyopathy or arrhythmias with substantial reduction of mortality of young competitive athletes by approximately 90%
- Screening feasibility due to the Italian Health System and limited costs of cardiovascular evaluation in a mass program setting
