Weight Loss Through Gastric Banding: Effects on TSH and Thyroid Hormones in Obese Subjects With Normal Thyroid Function
Obesity, 10/20/09
Dall'Asta C et al. – Albumin and cholesterol levels remained steady, while triglycerides, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance decreased, and high–density lipoprotein–cholesterol increased. These changes, however, do not modify TSH, letting us to hypothesize that the changes are due to a decrease of D1 and D2 deiodinase activities.

| in the so far largest published series of patients undergoing gastric banding, fT3 decreased, while fT4 increased and TSH remained steady; all hormones were within normal limits at baseline and remained within normal limits after surgery. Albumin and cholesterol levels remained steady, while triglycerides, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance decreased, and high–density lipoprotein–cholesterol increased. These changes, however, do not modify TSH, letting us to hypothesize that the changes are due to a decrease of D1 and D2 deiodinase activities. in summary, a normal thyroid function is not significantly affected by bariatric surgery, at least by restrictive bariatric surgery |
