Tumor Relapse after Pancreatic Cancer Resection is Detected Earlier by 18-FDG PET than by CT
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, 10/01/09
Pedrazzoli S et al. – Tumor relapse is detected earlier by FDG–PET than by CT. FDG–PET can help select the best candidates for surgical exploration, although the real benefit is still to be defined. It influences treatment strategies in a significant percentage of patients. An earlier diagnosis did not influence survival due to the lack of effective therapies.

| Although most patients’ tumors recur within 2 years of surgery, and the pattern of recurrence is well known, there is usually a delay between clinical manifestations and/or tumor marker elevation and the demonstration of tumor’s relapse. 18-FDG PET is very useful in demonstrating tumor relapse, especially in those patients with a negative or inconclusive CT or MRI. |
