Marra F et al. – The study shows that HIV–gp120 modulates different aspects of HSC biology, including directional cell movement and expression of pro–inflammatory cytokines. These results identify a direct pathway possibly linking HIV infection with liver fibrogenesis via envelope proteins.
Fabio Marra, 10/10/09
| Although fibrogenesis is a common evolution of chronic liver diseases, disease-specific mechanisms of firosis are being identified. Patients with HIV-HCV cinfection have an increasing mortality due to end-stage liver disease. This study has elucidated an additional pathway by which the presence of HIV may affect the fibrogenic process and trigger further inflammation. |
