Do Colorectal Cancer Patients Understand That Their Family Is at Risk
Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 09/23/09
Rubin DT et al. – Most CRC patients do not know about their family members’ risk. Better educational tools are needed.
David T. Rubin, 09/25/09
| We rely on patients knowing their family history in order to advise them about appropriate risk and prevention strategies. However, the communication of information from one family member to another can be a problem. We sought to determine if patients with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer had been informed and understood that their first degree family members were at increased risk, and if they did know this, whether they knew the recommended screening for those family members. Although others have studied whether the family members know of their risk, no one had looked at whether the patients knew and understood this essential information. We demonstrated a surprisingly large number of patients did not know of their family members' risk for colorectal cancer, and found that this was more problematic among African Americans than Caucasians. A mailed educational intervention did not improve the knowledge or understanding of this information. |
