Vatn MH et al. – MH has become a valuable marker of efficacy in IBD, predicting a favorable disease outcome. In the future, additional markers of healing are expected to be combined with today's endoscopic and histologic assessments.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Morten H. Vatn, 11/10/09

The increased interest in Mucosal healing in IBD, has been caused by the improved efficasy of biologic therapy. MH represents a valuable sign of efficasy and a prognostic marker. In this review, mucosal healing is also refered to as a general prognostic marker of disease outcome, regardless of choice of treatment. The definition of healing is, however, based on different diagnostic tools. The distinction between endoscopic, microscopic and immunologic healing, therefore, represents an interesting discussion for the future.
