Adolescent sexuality: Is your practice teen friendly?
Sexuality, Reproduction & Menopause, 10/02/09
Dietrich JE – Ask direct questions regarding adolescents’ thoughts about their changing bodies and concerns about the same or opposite sex. Health care providers should create an approachable environment in which all teens are comfortable discussing their thoughts and behaviors. The importance of the health care provider in educating teens seeking reproductive health services cannot be overemphasized. Providers contribute to the healthy development of adolescent sexuality by offering accurate, age–appropriate information about abstinence, STIs, contraception, and the consequences of early sexual activity.
- Teens are making decisions about sex at younger ages and are less likely to “think before they act.”
- More than 50% of teens reported oral sexual activity and 10% reported anal sex experimentation in one survey.
- Reinforce that struggling with sexual identity is common among all adolescents, whatever their sexual orientation.
- The importance of the health care provider in educating teens who seek “answers” cannot be overemphasized.
