Janssen PA et al. – Planned home birth attended by a registered midwife was associated with very low and comparable rates of perinatal death and reduced rates of obstetric interventions and other adverse perinatal outcomes compared with planned hospital birth attended by a midwife or physician.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Patricia A. Janssen, 09/21/09

This study extends current literature in that there was complete ascertainment of all home births in a population, the sample size was large enough to assess perinatal death, third party standardized data collection and abstraction methods were used, and the contribution of place of birth could be separated from caregiver.
