The time interval window between stroke onset and hospitalization and its related factors
Neuroepidemiology , 07/29/09
Turin TC et al. – Results show that clinically more severe stroke pts were hospitalized earlier and that nocturnal strokes delayed admission. Even on expansion of the therapeutic time window from <3 to <6 hr, a substantial proportion of pts would not benefit from acute intervention. Future research must focus not only on developing therapies for expanding the treatment time window, but also emphasize reducing the interval between onset and hospitalization.
Methods- Study of the time interval between stroke onset to hospitalization
- Search for factors influencing time interval
- Determination of whether an expanded treatment time window translates into more treatment
- Data from Takashima Stroke Registry for ~55,000 residents in Japan
- Assessment of 1,446 registered pts (761 men, 685 women) 1988-2002 for interval between stroke onset and hospitalization
- Multivariate regression analyses to evaluate factors influencing early and late admission
- Pt arrival within 3 hr of onset: 61.4%
- Pt arrival during 3- to 6-hr interval: 8.7%
- Pt arrival after 6 hrs: 29.9%
- Early stroke hospitalization significantly associated with severity of stroke event and time of stroke onset
