A comparison of quality of life, demographic and clinical characteristics of Brazilian men with fibromyalgia syndrome with male patients with depression
Rheumatology International, 07/09/09
Yoshikawa GT et al. – Study demonstrates that male patients with fibromyalgia (FM) experience worse quality of life (QoL) than depressive men. Depression was influential on mental health, whereas FM impacted on both physical and mental health.
Methods- Main objectives of this study were to:
- Assess the QoL in men with FM vs QoL of depressive pts
- Describe demographic and clinical characteristics of male pts with FM
- Evaluate basal levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and total testosterone in both groups; and
- Investigate the relationship among pain, tender points, anxiety, and depression in these pts
- 50 men with FM and 20 depressed males, matched by age and BMI
- All participants answered SF-36, the Beck Depression Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory questionnaire
- Radioimmunoassay was used to determine serum concentration of DHEAS and total testosterone
- Pts and controls had similar demographic characteristics
- Scores were lower in all domains of SF-36 in pts with FM vs depressive controls
- No differences observed among patient and control in the mean concn of either DHEAS or total testosterone
