Clinical Implications of Advances in the Basic Science of Liver Repair and Regeneration
American Journal of Transplantation, 06/30/09
Karp SJ - Elucidating the complex interactions of liver cells with each other and various matrix components during the response to injury is essential for fabricating a liver replacement device. This focused review will discuss how a variety of important scientific advances are likely to impact the treatment of specific types of liver disease.
Seth J. Karp, 07/09/09
| Combining recent advances in the basic science of liver repair and findings in regenerative medicine, this review highlights a number of promising approaches for the treatment of both acute and chronic human liver disease. Promising therapies include repopulating the liver with embryonic stem cells, liver progenitor cells, or fetal liver cells. Use of bone marrow derived cells to contribute genetic material is discussed. Enhancing the normal restorative capacity of the liver is another focus of ongoing research. These lines of investigation promise to revolutionize the treatment of liver disease in the near future. |
