Acupuncture for rheumatoid arthritis: A systematic review

Lee MS et al. - Review reports that penetrating or non-penetrating sham-controlled randomized clinical trials (RCTs) failed to show specific effects of acupuncture for pain control in patients with RA.

• Systematic review to evaluate the available evidence, from RCTs of acupuncture for treating RA pts
• Searches conducted on 17 databases up to April 2008
• All RCTs of acupuncture, with or w/o electrical stimulation or moxibustion were considered

• 236 relevant studies; 8 RCTs were included
• 4 RCTs comparing the effects of manual or electro-acupuncture with penetrating or non-penetrating sham acupuncture failed to show specific effects of acupuncture on pain or other outcome measures
• 1 RCT comparing manual acupuncture with indomethacin suggested favourable effects of acupuncture in terms of total response rate
• 3 RCTs failed to show that acupuncture plus moxibustion was superior to conventional drugs in terms of response rate, pain reduction or joint swelling index
