Do men and women respond differently to blood pressure-lowering treatment? Results of prospectively designed overviews of randomized trials
European Heart Journal, 10/31/08
Turnbull F et al. – All studied blood pressure-lowering regimens offer broadly similar protection against major cardiovascular events in men and women; differences between sexes in cardiovascular risks are unlikely to reflect differences in blood pressure-lowering treatment response
Methods- Overview analyses to quantify effects of blood pressure-lowering treatment in each sex and to determine any important differences in proportional benefits of treatment between men and women
- Review of 31 randomized trials of 103,268 men and 87,349 women
- Primary outcome: total major cardiovascular events
- Achieved blood pressure reductions comparable for men and women in every comparison
- No evidence that men and women had different levels of protection from blood pressure lowering
- No evidence that regimens based on angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors, calcium antagonists, angiotensin receptor blockers, or diuretics/beta-blockers were more effective for either sex
