Treatment with infliximab plus methotrexate improves anemia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis independent of improvement in other clinical outcome measures—a pooled analysis from three large, multicenter, double-blind, randomized clinical trials

Doyle MK et al. – Treatment with infliximab (antitumor necrosis factor-α monoclonal antibody) plus MTX improved hemoglobin levels among anemic RA patients versus treatment with placebo plus MTX, even after adjusting for improvement in disease activity.

• Study to evaluate the effect of infliximab treatment on anemia in RA pts
• Infliximab (3-10 mg/kg)/4 or 8 wks, and stable doses of MTX
• Percentage of anemic pts who had an increase from baseline in hemoglobin level ≥1 or 2 g/dL or achieved normal hemoglobin levels at wk 22 was determined
• Association of improvement in anemia with improvement in clinical parameters was also evaluated

• Infliximab plus MTX treatment produced a greater mean increase in hemoglobin levels from baseline to week 22 vs placebo plus MTX
• Greater proportions of anemic pts treated with infliximab plus MTX had either at least 40% or 12% increase in hemoglobin level
• Improvement in hemoglobin levels were consistently observed across subgroups and in pts w/o clinical response
• Effect of infliximab plus MTX on anemia was independent of improvement in disease activity
