The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) projected that annual U.S. spending on health care will double to $4.3 trillion by 2017, nearly one-fifth of gross domestic product. A slowdown in private spending is expected to be offset by faster growth in public-sector spending, partly due to the baby boom generation enrolling in Medicare.
