Exclusive author commentary
Ulrich DA et al. – Most children who are 8 to 15 years of age and who have been diagnosed with Down syndrome can learn to ride a 2–wheel bicycle. Learning to ride can reduce time spent in sedentary activity and increase time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity, which may influence the health and functioning of these children.
Dale A. Ulrich (08/26/2011) comments:
To achieve maximum health benefits from learning to ride a two wheel bicycle, health care professionals must encourage and reinforce parents of children with Down syndrome and their children to get out and ride. Our previous pilot research suggested that about 15% of those children with Down syndrome who learned to ride never rode their bicycle again after the training. Parent support for physical activity is very important.
