Beckwith S – The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published a new guideline on the management of depression in adults with cancer, heart disease, musculo– skeletal disorders, respiratory and neurological disorders and diabetes (2009). NICE suggests not that depression should be treated differently in such people but recognizes that it is 2–3 times more common in people with long–term conditions and the difficulty of making a diagnostic distinction between the somatic symptoms associated with chronic conditions and depression.
