Robitschek J et al. – The paired branchial structures of the human embryo undergo differentiation beginning in the third week of gestation, and development continues on through to the seventh week. Beginning in the fifth week, six discernable arches are formed on the lateral aspect of the developing neck. Consisting of mesoderm, these branchial arches are separated by folds of endoderm and ectoderm, which are characterized as pouches and clefts, respectively.
