Enhanced expression of podoplanin in ameloblastomas
Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine, 08/19/09
González–Alva P et al. – Expression of podoplanin in AMs is considered to be associated with neoplastic odontogenic tissues; this molecule might play a role in the collective cell migration of tumor nests in AMs. The pattern of expression of E–cadherin and vimentin suggests that invasion in AMs occurs in the absence of EMT. The migration and invasion mediated by podoplanin in AMs could be related to cytoskeletal reorganization.

| Nowadays, the cytodifferentiation and histopathogenesis of odontogenic tumors (OT) are still largely based on morphology of, and co-localization between OT and the developing tooth, thus allowing only hypothetical or theoretical reflections to be taken. In addition, invasion and metastasis are not unique to cancer, they also occur in many non-cancerous diseases. Our results have revealed podoplanin expression in the ameloblastomas, which are characterized by benign but locally invasive behavior; with a distinctive pattern of staining restricted to the invasive tumor front. Podoplanin may favor tumor invasion through its ability to remodel actin in the cytoskeleton of tumor cells, contributing to their increased motility. As research continues, the accumulating knowledge on cytogenetic and molecular genetic information will have a significant impact on our understanding of the biology and classification of OT. |
