Hypothyroidism in older patients with head and neck cancer after treatment with radiation: A population-based study
Head & Neck, 04/10/09
Smith GL et al. - In a study to identify the specific magnitude of risk after radiation treatment (RT) in older pts with head and neck cancer (HNC), it was found that RT is associated with elevated hypothyroidism risk. As onset may be delayed for yrs, pts may require lifelong thyroid function screening after treatment.
Methods- 5916 pts (age >65 yrs) were identified from SEER-Medicare diagnosed with HNC from 1992 to 2002.
- Proportional hazards models compared hypothyroidism risk after any RT vs surgery alone.
- In pts treated with RT, 5-yr incidence of hypothyroidism was 20% and 10-yr incidence was 59%.
- In pts treated with surgery alone, incidence was 7% and 39%.
- Pts treated with RT had increased adjusted risk, persisting for up to 10 yrs of follow-up.
