Avitia S et al. - A 61-year-old woman was referred to the clinic with an intact parathyroid hormone level of 164 pg/ml and a serum calcium level of 11.8 mg/dl. She had undergone sestamibi scanning at her local nuclear medicine department, which had showed retained radio pharmaceutical within the entire right thyroid lobe and the upper portion of the left lobe. Because the results of the sestamibi scanning had been inconclusive, the authors ordered magnetic resonance imaging of the neck with gadolinium contrast. These findings were consistent with a parathyroid adenoma and were confirmed surgically and pathologically.
