Witt RL et al. - Approximately 90% of all cases of vocal fold immobility occur as a result of compression of the vagus nerve or the recurrent laryngeal nerve between the jugular foramen and its entrance to the larynx. Laryngeal cancers rarely infiltrate the vagus nerve or the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The second most common cause of vocal fold immobility is iatrogenic activity, primarily during thyroid surgery. Other traumatic causes include blunt injury, gunshot wounds, and intubation. Idiopathic or viral etiology is the third most common cause.
