Treated hypothyroidism, cognitive function, and depressed mood in old age: The Rancho Bernardo Study
European Journal of Endocrinology, 09/22/09
Kramer C et al. – Long–term treated hypothyroidism is not associated with impaired cognitive function or depressed mood in old age. The lack of association with cognitive function is reassuring in regard to long–term use of thyroid hormone therapy.
Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, Caroline K. Kramer, et a, 09/29/09
| In our paper, we evaluated the cognitive function of 885 euthyroid and 149 hypothyroid-treated older adults using three standardized cognitive function tests + Beck Depression Inventory. The treated hypothyroid group had been treated with LT4 for an average of 20 years. These results suggest that long- term treatment of hypothyroidism is not associated with impairment of cognitive function in old age. |
