Thyroid Hormone Therapy for Obesity and Nonthyroidal Illnesses: A Systematic Review
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 09/10/09
Kaptein EM et al. – Thyroid hormone therapy to enhance weight loss in obesity during caloric deprivation and to improve morbidity and mortality in adults with nonthyroidal illnesses remains controversial. Available data are inconclusive regarding effectiveness of thyroid hormone therapy in treating obesity or nonthyroidal illnesses, whereas data support that such therapy induces subclinical hyperthyroidism.

| This systematic review arose from the lack of consensus on the topic. The major contribution is to enhance future research by a) identifying key endpoints, b) specifying areas where future efforts should be focused, and c) introducing the testing of equivalence as an analytical method to assess the adequacy of the evidence. |
