Assessing forearm fracture risk in postmenopausal women
Osteoporosis International, 08/31/09
Melton LJ et al. – Detailed bone structure and strength measurements provide insight into forearm fracture pathogenesis, but femoral neck aBMD performs adequeately for routine clinical risk assessment.
Methods- 100 postmenopausal women with a distal forearm fracture and 105 controls
- Femoral neck areal BMD was measured
- Radius volmetric BMD, geometry, and microstructure were assessed
- Ultradistal radius failure load was evaluated
- Fracture cases had inferior bone density, geometry, microstructure, and strength
- The most significant determinants of fracture was bone density, geometry, microstructure, and strength
- The predictors of forearm fracture risk were femoral neck aBMD and SMI
