Awareness Regarding Self Care among Diabetics in Rural India
Middle East Journal of Family Medicine, 07/02/09
Majra JP et al. - Self care is a crucial element in secondary prevention of diabetes. Diabetics had a poor level of knowledge about the disease and self-care and hence a very casual attitude towards the disease. This predisposes them to the risk of development of complications in later life. Health education is an area which needs to be addressed immediately to improve patients' knowledge and skills of diabetes self-care practices so that they can better contribute towards the management of their disease.
J P Majra, 07/03/09
| Diabetes is an emerging public health problem in India. About half of the cases are diagnosed by chance when the patients are investigated for some other disease. Those who are diagnosed as diabetics often fail to follow up with their doctors as most of the doctors as localated in urban areas whereas most of patients are living in rural areas. Under such circumstances selfcare assumes a graeter role. Selfcare can help to postpone many of the disabilities caused by diabetes and hence improve thier quality of life. |
