Ruottinen S et al. - Carbohydrate intake has a relatively small effect on serum lipids in children. Children with the apoE3 or E4 but not with E2 phenotype show reduction in HDL cholesterol with increasing carbohydrate intake indicating that genetic and environmental factors interact with children's lipoprotein metabolism.

A new finding in our study was that the inverse association between the total carbohydrate intake and serum HDL cholesterol concentration depended on the apoE phenotype in children. Indeed dietary carbohydrate intake had a relatively small and diverse effect on serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations. However, sucrose intake and serum triglyceride concentration showed moderate associations, as an increase in sucrose intake increased triglyceride concentration even thought the average sucrose intakes of the study children were within the current recommendations. Interesting finding was also that an increase in fructose intake was associated with decrease in HDL cholesterol and HDL/total cholesterol ratio and an increase in triglyceride and apoB concentrations. This study was part of the STRIP study, which is a prospective, randomized trial designed to decrease the exposure of children to known environmental atherosclerosis risk factors.
