AlSaraj F et al. - Most T2DM patients have MetS but it is uncommon in T1DM. Despite treatment, almost half of patients still met the criteria for MetS. Aggressive treatment of MetS components is required to reduce cardiovascular risk in DM.

It has been shown that patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) who also meet the criteria for the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) have a higher risk of vascular disease than those who do not have the MetS. In this study of 200 patients with DM, we found that the prevalence of MetS (Adult Treatment Panel III) in patients with type 2 DM was 69.5% and was significantly greater than that in type 1 DM (22%). In this analysis all subjects were assumed to meet the glycemic criterion for the MetS since they had diabetes and patients whose blood pressure was normal on treatment for hypertension were considered as meeting the blood pressure criteria. A further analysis looking at the actual measurements of waist circumference, blood glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels made on the day of the study, demonstrated that despite aggressive management of risk factors in these patients, 57% of type 2 DM patients still met the criteria for the MetS. This study highlights the need for particularly aggressive interventions in DM patients with the MetS to reduce their risk of serious vascular events.
