Echocardiography added little to the prenatal diagnosis of CHD if the comprehensive ultrasound examination was normal. The highest cost-benefit ratio and most efficacious protocol for screening based on the data would be comprehensive ultrasound with prenatal and postnatal echocardiography only as indicated.
