Impact of the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups diagnostic criteria on the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus in urban Mexican women: A cross-sectional study
Endocrine Practice, 08/26/2011
Reyes–Munoz E et al. – Using the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increased almost 3–fold compared with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria, yet no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of large for gestational age (LGA) newborn.
Methods- A cross–sectional study included 803 consecutive Mexican urban women with a singleton pregnancy, without concomitant diseases and who underwent a two–step protocol for diagnosis of GDM at admission to prenatal care.
- The ADA criteria identified 83 (10.3%) women while the IADPSG criteria diagnosed 242 (30.1%) women having GDM (p = 0.0001).
- Fasting glucose concentrations during the 100g–3h oral glucose tolerance test was abnormal in 116 (14.4%) women and in 160 (19.9%) women according to ADA and IADPSG criteria, respectively (p=0.004).
- The frequency of LGA newborns was 7.4%, and 6.0% respectively (p = 0.64).
