Increased vascularization of shoulder regions of carotid atherosclerotic plaques from patients with diabetes
Journal of Vascular Surgery, 07/27/2011
Olson FJ et al. – Diabetes is associated with a more rapid progression of atherosclerosis as well as with increased frequency of atherosclerotic complications. A number of studies suggest that plaque vascularization is a risk factor for cardiovascular complications. In this study, authors report that plaque tissue taken from patients with diabetes has an increased frequency of vascularization. A potential explanation is the concomitant increase in the expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor 2. Their finding may improve the understanding of the increased risk of atherosclerosis–related cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes.
