Low mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content in peripheral blood is related to decreased femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. The findings suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may be a potential pathophysiologic mechanism of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
