Parada SA et al. – A difficult component of ORIF of a joint–depression type calcaneus fracture is the restoration of normal height, width and Bohler’s angle. To facilitate this reduction, a Schanz pin may be placed into the tuberosity to use as a “joystick” to aid in direct control of the reduction, followed by Kirschner wires for provisional fixation. Reduction of the posterior facet can then be carried out under direct visualization. This step in the procedure is a critical one since reducing the tuberosity caudally establishes the restoration of the normal height and width of the calcaneus. Direct manipulation with a joystick may be difficult if the tuberosity has been significantly shortened for an extended period of time.
