Graf J et al. - The recently published results of NICE SUGAR – the single largest methodological, most robust trial with regard to intensified insulin therapy in the critically ill – showed that mortality was significantly higher in patients randomized to strict glucose control compared with the control group with a blood glucose of 140 to 180 mg/dl. These conflicting results with respect to already broadly established interventions prompts critical evaluation whether study results are applicable for diverse patient cohorts in different settings or only hold true for a single institution.
