Guralnik V et al. - Ethylene glycol is primarily a nontoxic substance which is metabolized into highly toxic products. The acute intoxication is characterized by marked metabolic acidosis with increased anion gap, reduced levels of consciousness, respiratory insufficiency and renal failure. Even small accounts of ingested ethylene glycol can lead to a fatal outcome if not adequately treated.
