Marickar YMF et al. – The decrease in the excretion rate of magnesium which is inhibitory to stone genesis, together with the increased excretion of calcium and oxalate may have contributed to the increasing incidence of stone disease in females. This might be due to changes in living standards and dietary habits.

Females were believed to be protected from stone disease in the past. However newer reports indicate that the incidence is rising. Various studies indicate different reasons for the rising incidence. Reduction in magnesium may be one of the factors. More detailed studies are needed to explain this rise in incidence.
