Chimonas S et al. - The authors question the assumption that good trumps harm when prescription drugs are provided free to practicing doctors. They argue that “sampling” is not effective in improving drug access for the indigent, does not promote rational drug use, and raises the cost of care. The findings are supported by an analysis of a large database of individuals who had received at least one prescription drug in a given year. In this study, indigent patients were less likely to receive samples than those classified as non-poor.
