Prescribing of psychotropic medication to the intellectually disabled by community paediatricians
Child: Care, Health, and Development, 05/05/09
Elliott SJ - Community paediatricians play a substantial role in prescribing psychotropic medications for this group. A substantial minority of community paediatricians do not feel that they have enough training to prescribe for ADHD and sleep disorders, and perceived competency is more likely to inform prescribing for ADHD than for sleep disorders. This may have implications for training. Although these children pose complex difficulties, access to specialist mental health services for children and adolescents with intellectual disability remains patchy, especially in the north-west, and further development of these services is needed.
