Prescription Abandonment Numbers on the Rise

The number of patients abandoning their prescription drug treatments spiked 34 percent according to a Wolters Kluwer report released to Pharm Exec on Tuesday. Abandonment is measured when a pharmacist submits a claim to the insurer, the insurer pays the amount that it's supposed to cover, but the patient never picks up the drug. As of the fourth quarter of 2008, the abandonment rate for prescription drugs was 6.77 percent, while the rate for generic drugs was 4.14 percent.
