A recent communication from CDC pointed out that 17 children have died so far this season from influenza-related complications. Bacterial coinfections were reported in six of the pediatric patients. Pharmacists should urge patients to get vaccinated as soon as possible and talk to them about getting their children immunized. Children aged 6 months through 8 years who have not previously been vaccinated need to get two doses of influenza vaccine in order to have appropriate protection. For the highly vulnerable population of infants younger than 6 months, CDC stresses that the best way to protect them is to immunize the adults in their lives because the infants are too young to receive the vaccine.
