Abreu-Velez AM et al. - The authors data demonstrate for the first time that there is immunoreactivity toward sweat glands in El Bagre-EPF patients that seems to destroy some of these structures.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Ana Maria Abreu-Velez, 06/29/09

Of importance to our findings is the fact that several other autoimmune skin diseases have been shown to have autoreactivity to sweat glands, including individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis/morphea, diabetes, active acute systemic multiple sclerosis, and sudden onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Abnorlmalities to sweat glands are also present in necrobiosis lipoidica. That is a granulomatous condition with a degenerative connective tissue often associated with diabetes, inranuloma annulare that is a benign, asymptomatic, self-limited papular eruption found in patients of all ages, in cystic fibrosis disease. (CF). CF is characterized by viscous mucus in the lungs with involvement of digestive and reproductive systems as well as sweat glands (excess salt loss). In psoriasis, in Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, in Tetralogy of Fallot, in trisomies 13, 18, and 2, in graft versus host disease, in atopic dermatitis, in Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome, ectodermal dysplastic syndromes, in incontinentia pigmenti, in Grover’s disease and alcohol toxicity. In drug-induced coma, in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and Fox-Fordyce disease, in hidradenitis suppurativa, in lichen planus, in discoid lupus erythematosus, in fixed drug eruption, and erythema multiforme. Finally, drug-induced coma with sweat gland necrosis , cutaneous vasculitis, and in other systemic diseases such chronic renal disease and in nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
