Melanoma-Derived Conditioned Media Efficiently Induce the Differentiation of Monocytes to Macrophages that Display a Highly Invasive Gene Signature

Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research, 05/04/2012

The authors demonstrate that both melanoma–conditioned medium (MCM)–induced macrophages (MCMI–Mφ) and in vivo tumor–associated macrophages (TAMs) express the pro–invasive, melanoma–associated gene, GPMNB. The study provides a framework for understanding the mechanisms of crosstalk between TAMs and melanoma cells within the tumor microenvironment.
