On cone-beam computed tomography artifacts induced by titanium implants
Clinical Oral Implants Research, 10/26/09
Schulze RKW et al. – The theoretical and experimental results prove massive beam–hardening artifacts for a typical implant diameter and typical energies of up–to–date CBCT machines. Meaningful artifact reduction has to be based on more sophisticated mathematical modeling of the actual physical image acquisition process rather than on postprocessing of the erroneous results obtained from the rather crude reconstruction algorithms used presently.
Ralf Kurt Willy Schulze, 10/27/09
| It is important to note that beam hardening artifacts, albeit being the most prominent in this context, are just one source of artifacts among many others. The article intends to make the user aware of the shortcomings of 3D radiographic imaging, i.e. CBCT imaging here. The sense of 3D medical imaging is not so much producing nice pictures, it is more about obtaining a correct (in the sense of error reduced) display of the structures inside the patient. |
