Vasisht VN et al. – The orthodontic adhesives and attachments should be capable of withstanding normal forces of mastication, loads exerted by arch wires and even some abuse by the patient. Reynolds in 1975 has recommended the minimum acceptable bond strength to be 5.88 – 7.85 MPa. The maximum bond strength should be less than the fracture resistance of enamel, i.e., 16MPa to avoid damage during debonding. Reports of higher bond failures in molars are mostly attributable to the larger masticatory forces and difficulty in obtaining adequate isolation posteriorly in the mouth.
