Canadian physicians received an average of $250,000 (gross) in fee-for-service payments in 2005–2006—a 19% increase compared with six years ago, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). This average is based on physicians who received at least $60,000 in such payments. Fee-for-service payments account for 80% of what doctors earn collectively in Canada, with the balance coming from alternative payments, such as salaries, contracts and sessional fees
